Professor Thomas Kohn is a digital veteran and two-time CEO, focused on creating new revenue streams and businesses for companies big and small. He is currently a term professor/executive in residence at American University’s Kogod School of Business teaching entrepreneurship, business strategy, organizational behavior, and global corporate citizenship. At AU he has served as the program director for Kogod’s Professional (executive) MBA program.

Concurrently, Kohn works with companies on issues of business development, marketing, fundraising, and strategy. He cofounded and was CEO of e-billing company Transactis, which has now raised $70 million from investors such as Wells Fargo, PNC, Capital One, Fifth Third, TD, the venture capital firm Safeguard Scientifics, and others. Kohn also was the first employee and CEO of Bid4Assets, where he helped raise $10 million. Both firms are thriving and profitable. As EVP of digital for Cygnus Business Media, he helped transform the company’s digital strategy and increase digital revenue, overseeing groups focused on technology, new product development, multimedia, digital operations, and design. In April 2013, in New York City, Kohn was inducted into the Media Industry News (MIN) Digital Hall of Fame. In 2012, MIN named Cygnus Digital a finalist for Digital Team of the Year.

Kohn has worked in the Internet industry since it began, enjoying positions with AOL, Viacom New Media, Freeloader, and USATODAY.com/Gannett, where he was chief revenue officer, creating and launching the site’s new e-commerce initiative and a $20 million revenue stream. Pre-Internet and business school, Kohn conceived of, launched, and produced several television and radio programs in New York City, produced nationally aired commercials for Ogilvy & Mather (including a Super Bowl spot for American Express), and launched the East Coast office of a Los Angeles–based television production company.
